Ying and Yang Bowls

My Ying and Yang Bowls were shown in a juried show ("Clay 2010" at Everygreen Cultural Center in Coquitlam), they were featured in Tri-City News two weeks ago.

I've been making more of these bowls currently, with colors....and I'm excited to see the color version of my Ying and Yang bowls.

[CRAM 310] Pedestal Tray

The first firing was not quite successful because my pieces were over fired to cone 8 (it's supposed to be cone 6). I remake some pieces and fired them in cone 5, and they turn out much better than the first attempt. I'm quite happy with the result! A happy smile on my face :).

[CRAM 310] Parts in a Box

After casting my objects, I will need to join them later. In the meantime, I need to keep my parts wet, so I put them in a plastic box which has a layer of plaster at the bottom. The plaster will take the water and release moist in the box. It creates kind of a circulation system, like a greenhouse. This makes my life much easier so that I can keep my parts (or even the unused parts) for the future.

[CRAM 310] Molds Making

Mold making was not fun for me because it takes me forever to make a single mold. But when I told myself I can use the same mold hundreds times or more, I get over it and starts enjoying the process. Here are the molds that I've made for my pedestal tray.

[CRAM 310] "V" Plates

The color of my plates turn out pretty nice, and close to my expectation.
I discovered the red turn out really bright and RED, and I am really pleased with the result. One thing is that some plates wropped during firing, and my teacher suggested me to make a solid mold instead, so that the the mold can fix the shape better. Yeah....I learn an important lesson!!!!!

[CRAM 310] "V" Plates in the Kiln

Another approach for this project is to explore the color (glaze / underglaze) and the glaze application. I also want to test how the combination of glazes work together. From the glaze, it doesn't really show how the color turns out.

I used both masking tape and hand painted techniques on them. The masking tape technique didn't work very well, because it didn't really stick on the plate nor on the surface with glaze. It took me days to glaze a dozen plates!!!!!
