"Beyond Authorities", 8" x 12", Ceramics, 2007

Pluto was discovered in 1930 but it was removed from the solar system in 2006. The “destiny” of Pluto is voted and determined by only 424 members from International Astronomical Union (IAU), which has actually more than 9,000 members. According to the human definition, a planet must have sufficient mass, and it should be in orbit around the Sun. Similarly, it is what we’ve learnt from our social system: bigger is the best, and ordinary people must follow the rules set by authorities. It is a pity that there is no seat for Pluto in the new solar system. However, the change doesn’t affect Pluto at all, and it is still undertaken its duty as usual.

My piece is constructed by 424 pieces of semi sphere which represent the authority in decision making. Indeed, the human system is as fragile as a ceramic, and it can be collapsed in just a few second.
